ROMSEY ABBEY GIRLS' CHOIR

The Girls’ Choir is an important part of the music at Romsey Abbey. It was set up in October 1996 by Diane Williams, whose husband was then the organist and Master of the Choristers at the Abbey. There are now 15 girls aged between 8 and 15 years old. The Girls’ Choir sings at the Shorter Eucharist service once a month and has also sung Evensongs, and at least one service each term with altos, tenors and basses.

The girls in the choir continue to work hard, increasing their repertoire and always striving to further improve their already high standard of singing. The girls rehearse once a week during term times and their main aim is to complement the work of the main Abbey Choir and to provide music of a high standard for the monthly Shorter Eucharist services.

The girl choristers now sing with the main Abbey Choir occasionally during the year and for other special services such as the Induction and collation of the new vicar.

Apart from Abbey services, the Girls’ Choir has taken part in concerts over the years.

Daphne Lindsell has been the musical director of the Girls’ Choir since April 2001.

Entry to the Girls’ Choir is by audition and new members may join at any time of the year. Some musical experience is helpful, for example the ability to play a musical instrument, but the important factor is the ability to sing in tune, together with enthusiasm for singing and a willingness to work hard.

Enquiries about membership should be made to the Director of the Girls’ Choir, Daphne Lindsell: Telephone 01794 515014 or E-mail dogc@romseyabbey.org.uk
