Where are ex-choristers now — Matt Brook

Matt was in the choir from 1992-1998, latterly as head chorister. After gaining A- Levels at Peter Symonds College, Winchesterr, he is now on a gap year with a difference before heading to Durham University to read Business Economics.

Having passed the Army’s stringent Regular Commissions Board he secured a gap year commission with the Royal Logistics Corps. During an action-packed year, he has passed out from Sandhurst, spent four weeks skiing in Bavaria, competed with great success in a major shooting competition and is currently finishing a six-week exercise in Jamaica. Here he has been responsible for buying local supplies to support a jungle warfare exercise. Here is an extract from a recent letter home:

“As I write we are having some of the heaviest tropical rain so far. The rain has been torrential for 4-5 hours each day for three days – not good for the tan! I did the military swimming test in the sea and, this time, with full kit and boots on. It was weird but good fun!

“Yesterday I took the ‘death ride’ to Kingston with the postie and met the Defence Attach and the High Commissioner. Today I went to the scuba diving centre to drop off people on the first course (I start on Monday!!). We travelled in a badly canvassed truck, which meant I was soaked by the time we got there. However the ginger beer by the Blue Lagoon made up for the sogginess!

“It’s Labour Day in Jamaica today, so there is little local purchase I can do. The paperwork is starting to get a bit tedious, but at least it is all there and sorted.”

You get the picture: good fun coupled with hard work and a great deal of responsibility. Matt says that the discipline of Choir training was ideal preparation and that the RSM at Sandhurst was a pussycat compared with Jeff Williams!
