The First Sunday of Advent is celebrated this Sunday at Romsey Abbey with a special candlelit service at 6.30pm – The Advent Sequence.
“Traditionally, the season of Advent was kept as a time of great anticipation of the rejoicing of Christ’s coming.
This service aims to recapture something of that magical Advent longing and hope,” said vicar, Tim Sledge.
The service begins in darkness, with the Advent Responsory sung by the choir. Following a procession with light carried to other parts of the church, the service is structured around the Advent Antiphons, known as “The Great O’s”, and complemented by music and readings. The season of Advent continues throughout December and is celebrated in the Abbey with carol services, the Children’s Society Christingle Service on December 11 at 3pm, concerts and the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on December 21 at 7.30pm.
