November has proved to be a busy month for us. We began it on 2 November – the Feast of All Souls – with the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed.
On Sunday 6 November, the Choir of Sherborne Abbey joined us to sing Choral Evensong. The music comprised the Evening Service in A by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, the Te Deum Collegium Regale by Herbert Howells and the Responses by Richard Shephard. With over 50 singers making the most of some thrilling choral writing, it was one of the highlights of the term. Our visitors also enjoyed the splendid tea that Romsey choir mums laid on for them.
Last Friday, the Friends of Romsey Abbey Choirs held a Quiz Night in the Church Rooms. With rounds covering song lyrics and mystery pictures as well as subjects such as sports and geography and a fish’n’chip supper, there was something for everybody. Some 50 people attended and had a thoroughly enjoyable time; we raised £170.
Remembrance Sunday saw us singing for the Civic Service of Remembrance, in addition to the Sung Eucharist and Evensong. It was well attended by local dignitaries, members of the Royal British Legion and cadet and scout troops. Buglers sounded the Last Post and Reveille from the font, after which the colours of the various organisations were carried in procession down the nave.
At the end of the month, we will be singing at the Advent Procession, when the countdown to Christmas begins in earnest.
