As has become our custom, we start the month with our annual visit to Sherborne Abbey to sing a combined Choral Evensong as part of its music festival. The girls’ choir are singing both services in Romsey that day and will also be well worth supporting.
Given that Easter was early – and I’m sure all the men would join me in commending the boys for their singing during Holy Week – the Feast of the Ascension falls on 9 May. We are singing Gerald Finzi’s glorious anthem God is gone up.
Herbert Howells’s Evening Service in G gets its first outing ten days later (it was postponed from Easter Sunday); the Nunc Dimittis is especially lovely.
Although Trinity Sunday marks the start of the half-term holiday, the men are singing for the 10am Sung Eucharist; the motet is William Mundy’s Let us now laud and magnify.
