The Westcountry was the destination for Romsey Abbey Choir on Sunday 4 May, when it joined forces with Sherborne Abbey Choir to sing Choral Evensong in Sherborne Abbey. This is part of a growing partnership with similar local venues to Romsey Abbey, and will see Sherborne return to Romsey for a ‘home fixture’ later in the year. The choirs were conducted by Paul Ellis, Director of Music at Sherborne Abbey; and Canon Eric Woods, Vicar of Sherborne, presided.
In keeping with the local links, the service included music by Sir George Dyson, who taught at Winchester and died 50 years ago this year. Romsey Abbey Organist and Master of the Choristers, Robert Fielding commented: “It is always a pleasure to sing in Sherborne Abbey and made a memorable bank holiday weekend for our singers. They enjoyed the privilege of being part of a formidable choral force as part of Sherborne Abbey’s annual music festival.”
Tea was generously provided before the service by Sherborne Mother’s Union and Abbey Choir parents.
• On Saturday 17 May in Winchester Cathedral, Romsey Abbey Girl Choristers sang Choral Evensong with the Girl Choristers of Winchester Cathedral, in what was their first such joint service.
