Fourteen intrepid Romsey Abbey Girl Choristers, with their choirmistress Diane Williams, joined Winchester Cathedral Girls Choristers under the directorship of Andrew Lumsden on Saturday 17th Evensong in Winchester Cathedral. To sing in our local cathedral which is regarded highly in the country was something very special.

The Girls sang three-part Responses  by Malcolm Archer, Dyson’s Evening Service in C minor, Psalm 150 and, for the anthem, a setting of The Prayer of St. Richard of Chichester by E. W. White. George Castle accompanied admirably the girls at the console of the Cathedral’s Willis organ.

The congregation included choir families and a party from Washington DC. Rev. Canon Susan Wallace, Precentor and Sacrist, led the service with the Very Rev James Atwell, the Dean, and Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Matta Roham of Jezira and Euphrates, who is visiting the UK, sang the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic, the language of Jesus, before finishing with the Blessing in his native language.

At the end of the service, the Dean thanked us for our contribution to Evensong and Andrew Lumsden suggested a ‘rematch’ next year in Romsey Abbey.
