For us, the Mayday Bank Holiday means our annual excursion to Sherborne Abbey, where we will once again be singing a combined Choral Evensong as part of its music festival. Feel free to come along and join the congregation: it’s a lovely day out, especially if the weather is good – as it often is; the music will comprise the Evening Service in D by George Dyson and Haydn’s dramatic anthem Insanæ et vanæ curæ.
The girls’ choir are therefore singing both Sunday services in Romsey on 4 May, whilst at 5.30pm on Saturday 17 May, they join the Girl Choristers of Winchester Cathedral at the Cathedral to sing Choral Evensong; the music will be the Evening Service in C minor by George Dyson and a setting of a prayer of St. Richard of Chichester by L. J. White. Do join them there.
We are indebted to Bridget Brook, who once again kindly paid for a 10-pin bowling match in honour of Peter Brook, a much-missed tenor in the choir, for both boys and girls at AMF in Eastleigh on Saturday 8 March. Henry Roberts battled hard to hold onto the trophy that he won last year but this year it was won by Oliver Corbett. Well done to all who took part and thank you to all the adults who supervised them.
Although the April draw has now taken place, new members of our 100 Club are still very welcome. Each number costs £2.50 a month by standing order or £30 a year; the proceeds are split 50/50 between the prize pot and choir funds. It enables us to lay on the trips, workshops and activities that motivate boys, girls and their parents to stick with the choir and provide a musical dimension to worship at the Abbey that we know so many of you enjoy. If you’d like to take part – and of course more members mean a bigger prize fund! – please contact us.
