As a grandparent of one of the choristers in Romsey Abbey Girls’ Choir, it was a true delight to journey with them on Sunday 6 July to Christchurch Priory, where they joined with the Priory Girls’ Choir to lead the sung Evensong.
Mary Goodman, Director of the Priory Choir, made the girls very welcome and before they got down to singing practice the girls from both choirs played some team games. This was a tremendous way for the girls to re-acquaint themselves with one another and it certainly showed in the music later.
You would not have thought that they were two choirs; they sang as one. The singing was superb and technically challenging, and all brought together during the afternoon. The acoustics of the Priory added to the quality of sound.
The pieces that the choir sang were:
Preces and Responses for unison voices by Archer
Sumsion in G
The Father’s Love by Lole.
Romsey Abbey should be very proud of the choir, who are wonderful ambassadors. They can’t wait to host the Priory Girls, when they hopefully come to the Abbey next year for, as Di Williams, Romsey Abbey Choir Director puts it “a return match”.
