November begins for us with the Feast of All Souls. At the annual Bereavement Service, we will be singing for the first time a Nunc Dimittis from one of Robert Fielding’s own Evening Services; the boys were especially pleased to discover that the Gloria concludes with a snatch from the Indiana Jones theme!
Sherborne Abbey choir will be joining us on Sunday 16 November to sing Evensong at 5.30 pm (note the earlier time). The music will include the Collegium Regale Evening service by Herbert Howells and and Sir Edward Bairstow’s atmospheric anthem Let all mortal flesh keep silence, a setting of words from the Divine Service of St. James.
Thereafter, our attention turns towards Advent and Christmas. Especially helpful will be the new set of 100 Carols for Choirs donated by the Perfect family in memory of Marie Perfect (grandmother to Henry Roberts, a senior chorister in the choir). We are very greateful for their generosity.
Recruitment is now a priority and Robert is searching Romsey and district for boys and parents willing to commit to the choir. The boys sang at the Abbey’s Open Day in September and circulated afterwards among those present, looking for anybody interested. Please get in touch if you know of anyone who might be interested.
