December brings yuletide treats both new and familiar.

Highlights include the first outing for the girls and men of the Magnificat from the Gloucester Service by Herbert Howells. It begins with a beautiful soprano melody and, after dramatic choral writing in the central sections, the Gloria fades out and floats away into the heavens. On Christmas Eve is yet another Abbey first: the Missa ad Præsepe, or Mass at the Crib, by George Malcolm. It’s a beautiful work that evokes rustic pipers in places and perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas.

Away from the choir stalls, we’re looking forward to taking part in the annual George’s Trust Christmas concert. Not only that, the boys and girls are spending an afternoon playing laser quest courtesy of our Friends. We’re very grateful, as ever, for their support.
