We will mark the 2017 Ethelflaeda Festival (Wednesday 18th October to Sunday 22nd October 2017) with guest preachers and additional compline services.

The focus of the festival falls on Sunday 22nd October 2017 when we welcome:

The Very Revd Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester to our 10am Festal Eucharist and

Revd Rosie Ward to our 6.30pm Festal Evensong with Procession.

In addition, on Wednesday 18th October 2017: Romsey Abbey Primary School pupils will spend the day and night entering into the life of the Abbey. They will also attend Compline at 9pm sung by the Girls Choir.

Additional Compline (said) services will also take place on Thursday 19th & Friday 20th October.

The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, will deliver the sermon entitled St Ethelflaeda: our patron saint both holy and human. Catherine Ogle was installed as Dean of Winchester earlier this year. Catherine was among the first women ordained to the priesthood and spent 20 years in parish ministry in West Yorkshire, and 4 years at BBC North, before being made Dean of Birmingham in 2010.

Reverend Rosie Ward, will preach at the Festival Evensong and will refer both to other Abbesses and women in the Church today. Revd Rosie Ward has recently retired to Winchester Diocese after 23 years of ordained ministry, serving in parishes in Bristol and Ely Dioceses, and also working for CPAS as a Leadership Development Adviser. She has written two books about women’s ministry, and is a member of the Transformations Steering Group, which aims to further the development of women’s ordained ministry in the Church of England.
