Our weekly Christian Meditation Group meeting takes place at Wisdom Centre (The Abbey, SO51 8EL) every Wednesday at 7.30pm – 8.30pm. The group is based on the teachings of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM), a Benedictine organisation founded by John Main.
Many of our group have also practiced Buddhist, Advaita Vedanta and Sufi traditions at some point on their journey; this inter-spiritual approach is respected and welcomed. Many of our group were introduced to Meditation through the secular practice of Mindfulness following a period of stress, depression or anxiety. Our group welcomes every one of all faiths and none, we recognise that we are all fellow pilgrims wherever we may be on our journey. The mixed nature of our group upholds the Christian values of love, nourishment, and acceptance. Everyone is welcome!
Group leader Fiona Jenvey writes, ‘Meditation helps us feel a sense of wellbeing, it also creates space in our busy lives to listen to God’s silent presence within our hearts. As St. Benedict said, before we ask God for anything, he will say to us, “Here I am” (Rule of St. Benedict, Prologue).
‘It is my great privilege to lead and facilitate a group of such spiritually minded people. I spent many years in the corporate world of Design and Media. I am now the WCCM co-ordinator for Hampshire, I am studying for an MA in Christian Spirituality; alongside this, I am exploring ordained Pioneer Ministry within the Church of England. Pioneer Ministry is about working with diverse groups of people within the emerging Church. My main interest is Benedictine Spirituality. I am also very inspired by the 14th-century Christian Mystic, Meister Eckhart, whose writings have often been compared to Buddhist and other Eastern Spiritualties.’
There is no charge for the meditation group although small donations are welcome as a help towards the cost of staff and provisions for the evening. Wisdom Centre also has a selection of books with spiritually encouraging readings. All sessions are on a ‘drop-in’ basis, however, Wisdom Centre finds it useful to know if you plan to attend so an appropriate number of chairs can be set out in their meditation room.
