The Choir Fun Day on 18 May switched to a different venue this year and was judged a great success. Holding it at Mountbatten School was judged to be more convenient – the adults could enjoy a glass or three and then stagger home rather than drive – and the facilities proved to be in no way inferior to those previously offered at Roke Manor. We had, as ever, been, kept on tenterhooks by the weather. Temperatures had soared two days earlier to levels not enjoyed since the previous August and the maxim ‘Two fine days and a thunderstorm’ appeared likely to apply once again.More »

On Sunday 5 May, having been invited just a couple of weeks previously, we joined our counterparts from Christchurch Priory and Sherborne Abbey to sing Choral Evensong in Sherborne Abbey. The service formed part of the Sherborne Abbey Festival and recalls a very enjoyable service in November 2000 when the Choir of Sherborne Abbey visited Romsey to sing Evensong with us. The boys of the three choirs needed little encouragement from Jeffrey Williams to setMore »

Choral Evensong on Saturday 4 May, was sung by the Choir of Winchester Cathedral, under the direction of their Organist, David Hill. It followed a masterclass organised by the Winchester and District Organists Association. The music – superbly sung – comprised the Responses set by Richard Lloyd, the New College Service by Herbert Howells and the three Latin Motets by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford: Justorum animae; Beati quorum via integra est; and Cœlos ascendit hodie. It was very interesting for members of the Abbey Choir to appreciate the acoustic in which we sing from seats in the congregation on this occasion.More »
