Abbey Lighting

Romsey Abbey is a busy parish church and an important concert venue for the area, as well as hosting exhibitions and civic occasions. Most of the electricity in the Abbey is used by about 80 old high-level power-hungry halogen spotlights. We are planning to replace the spotlights with modern LEDS that are expected to use 75% less power, last longer and offer better control and lighting effects.

What we have done already

We have installed LEDs for the small lights in the aisles.

We have programmed controls to light areas of the Abbey in use (although safety requires some lighting in all areas).

Twelve concert spotlights, (for lighting the "stage" area) now use LED lamps.

What we plan to do

We will continue to replace spotlights with LEDs. Halogen lights each use 650 watts whereas new LEDs would use 170 watts.

We will installa new control system which will improve flexibility and possible also enhance dimming effects and use of colour.

Next steps

Following a competitive tendering process, we selected Heritage Lighting Matters to advise on replacing the old expensive lighting system. The study is underway and is expected to take around one month. The PCC will then consider their recommendations and make a decision on the solution to be implemented.
